Why I Enjoy Working with the Older Crowd

When I was a child, my grandmother was simply "Nanny." She crocheted blankets that warmed our laps, sweaters to keep us warm in the cold, and gave me books that sparked my lifelong love of reading. To me, she was comfort, creativity, and kindness all wrapped in one. She was the one who made everything feel safe and familiar.
But as I grew older and became a mother myself, something shifted. I began to see Nanny not just as my grandmother, but as a woman with a rich, complex life. I started asking more questions, listening more closely, and seeing her in a new light. I learned about her struggles - raising children during hard times, losing loved ones, and making sacrifices I had never known about. I also saw her strength, humor, and quiet wisdom. She became someone I turned to for advice, someone I admired deeply - not just for what she did for me, but for who she was.
That transformation in how I saw my grandmother opened my eyes to something bigger: the richness of older generations. It made me realize how much we miss when we only see older adults through the lens of age or need. There is so much more beneath the surface - so many stories, lessons and experiences waiting to be shared.
A Different Kind of Education
Working with the elderly has become one of the most rewarding parts of my life. It's a different kind of education - one that you can't get from a classroom or textbook. It's the kind of learning that comes from sitting beside someone who has lived through decades of change, who has loved and lost, who has seen the world evolve in ways we can only imagine.
Every person I meet has a story. Some are funny, some are heartbreaking, and some are quietly profound. I've met women who marched for civil rights, survived the holocaust, men who have built their homes with their own hands, and couples who have been married longer than I've been alive. I've heard about wartime romances, family traditions, and the little moments that shaped entire lives.
And what strikes me most is how much they still have to give. Their wisdom, their humor, their resilience - it's all still there, waiting to be seen and appreciated.
More Than a Job - A Privilege
Work with the older crowd has taught me patience, empathy and the value of truly listening. It's not just about providing a service - it's about building relationships. It's about honoring the people who came before us and recognizing the value they still bring to our lives.
In a world that often moves too fast and prizes youth above all else. I've found something deeply grounding in slowing down and connecting with those who have already walked the path. They remind me of what matters. They remind me to be present. And they remind me that aging isn't something to fear - it's something to respect.
This work isn't just a job for me. It's a calling. It's a way to give back, to learn and to carry forward the stories that might otherwise be forgotten.
