Cold Calling Isn't My Thing - And Here's Why

I didn't start Beauty for the Homebound to become a telemarketer.
But some days, that's exactly what it feels like. Me, sitting with my laptop, searching for nail technicians and hairdressers on Instagram and Facebook, phone in hand, heart pounding, trying to convince a complete stranger that I'm not running a scam.
Let me clear: I hate cold calling. It's awkward. It's vulnerable. It's exhausting trying to explain something meaningful in 30 seconds before someone hangs up or gives me a polite yet skeptical "I'll think about it."
But what's even harder than the rejection is the fear that they think I'm trying to take advantage of them.
The Fear of Being Seen as a Scam
I get it. The beauty industry is flooded with offers that sound too good to be true. "No commission fees!" "No contracts!" "Only $15/month!" It sounds like a gimmick, right?
But it's not.
Beauty for the Homebound is a real, grassroots effort to connect beauty professionals with homebound individuals who can't get to a salon. It's about dignity. It's about care. It's about creating income opportunities for stylists and nail techs who want to do meaningful work on their own terms.
There's no catch. No fine print. Just a simple subscription model that gives professionals visibility and access to a community that desperately needs them.
Still, when I call and hear the hesitation in someone's voice - or worse, the click of a phone hanging up - it stings. Not because I need their approval, but because I know what they're missing out on. And I know what our clients are missing out on too.
Why I Keep Picking Up the Phone
I didn't go back to school at 38 for human services just to play it safe. I didn't start this business to get rich. I started it because I saw a gap - people stuck at home, forgotten, still wanting to feel beautiful. And I saw professionals who could fill that gap, if they only knew the opportunity existed.
So I keep calling. Not because I love it, but because I believe in what I am building.
And every once in a while, someone picks up the phone and gets it. They hear the passion in my voice. They ask questions. They join us and bring a smile to someone's face and uplift their spirits. That's what keeps me going.
To the Ones Who Understand
If you're a stylist or a nail tech who's ever felt like your work should mean more - this is for you.
If you've ever wanted to serve people who truly appreciate your time and talent - this is for you.
If you've ever wanted to be part of something that's about more than just money - this is for you.
I may not be great a cold calling. But I'm great at caring. And I'm building something that matters.
So if you're reading this, and you're curious, reach out. Ask questions. Let's talk. Because maybe this call isn't so cold after all.
